As a homeowner, you are responsible for maintenance of your septic system. There are many resources for septic system owners. The first would be to start with the Septic System Management Plan for Below Grade Systems that is given to homeowners when they have septic systems upgraded or replaced. An image of the current form used for this is shown to the right. If you do not have one, you can contact the Township Clerk to see if one is on file for your property. Be sure to specify the property address in the subject line.
If you cannot locate your management plan, the University of MN has some Septic Tank Pumping Guidelines that may help.
Septic compliance inspections are required to be dated within 10 years when you apply for a building permit. If you do not have a compliance inspection on file, it will be required before you can obtain a building permit. If you apply for various use permits or variances, septic compliance inspections may be required at that time as well, depending upon the application.
